Many devotees, after purchasing Rudraksha, are told, “This is not Rudraksha, it’s Bhadraaksha.”
Both look similar, both grow on tall trees, and both are used as rosaries. Yet, their origin and energy are completely different.
In my 21 years of study of the Shiva Purana, Padma Purana, and Rudraksha Jabalopanishad, I have found that Rudraksha and Bhadraaksha differ not only in form, but also in vibration, consciousness, and purpose.
Let us understand this difference from the perspective of scriptures, science, and energy.
Scriptural Origins: What the Puranas Say
Rudraksha:
According to the Shiva Purana (Vidyeshvara Samhita, Chapter 25), when Lord Shiva opened his eyes after a long meditation, drops of his tears fell on the earth. From these divine tears emerged the Rudraksha trees.
“When the Lord’s tears touched the ground, Rudraksha trees were born for the welfare of all beings.”
Thus, Rudraksha is the crystallized compassion of Shiva; a living symbol of protection, wisdom and liberation.
Bhadraksha:
Some later Puranas such as the Padma Purana describe another variety of seed called Bhadraksha; similar in shape but earthly in origin. The name “Bhadra” means pleasant in appearance, yet scriptures clearly differentiate it from Rudraksha.
Bhadraksha is said to lack divine energy and is never prescribed for wearing or worship.
Essence: Rudraksha = Tears of Shiva | Bhadraksha = Imitation of Nature

Botanical and Geographical Differences
| Aspect | Rudraksha | Bhadraksha |
| Scientific Name | Elaeocarpus ganitrus | Elaeocarpus sphaericus / angustifolius |
| Origin Region | Himalayas – Nepal, Indonesia, India | Plains of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh |
| Shape | Round or oval with deep grooves | Smooth or flattened, less defined |
| Natural Hole | One hole from top to bottom | Usually two holes or none |
| Surface Texture | Rough, thorny projections | Smooth and glossy |
| Mukhi Lines | Deep and unbroken | Shallow or incomplete |
| Color | Brown to reddish | Pale yellow to dark brown |
| Energy Charge | Strong bio-electrical potential | Negligible or none |
Scientific note: Laboratory studies show that Rudraksha seeds have a high dielectric constant; they stabilize bioelectric currents in the body. Bhadraaksha seeds do not have this conductivity.
Spiritual and Energetic Differences
| Aspect | Rudraksha | Bhadraksha |
| Spiritual Source | Born of Shiva’s compassion | Naturally occurring seed without mantric charge |
| Effect on Aura | Calms mind, balances chakras & karma patterns | Neutral – no energetic impact |
| Scriptural Value | Mentioned in Shiva Purana, Padma Purana, Upanishads | Mentioned only as look-alike |
| Use in Sadhana | Meditation, healing, remedy wear | Decorative or symbolic |
| Result on Mantra Japa | Amplifies vibration & focus | No resonance felt |
Symbolic insight:
Rudraksha opens consciousness; Bhadraksha only pleases the eyes.
How to Identify Genuine Rudraksha
- Single Hole Test: One natural hole through the seed; never two.
- Complete Mukhi Lines: Run unbroken from top to bottom.
- Texture & Feel: Naturally thorny; not smooth or machine-carved.
- X-ray Verification: Shows internal segments equal to the number of mukhis.
- Water Float Test (Caution): Some authentic beads float due to air pockets; so not a final proof.
Vision Advice: Buy only from verified spiritual sources providing X-ray certification and classical energy.

Scriptural Warning: Wearing Bhadraksha by Mistake
The Padma Purana cautions:
“As gold differs from brass, so does Rudraksha differ from Bhadraksha.”
Wearing Bhadraksha unintentionally does not cause harm, but it dilutes the energy of mantra and disconnects the wearer from the Rudra frequency. It is spiritually neutral; neither auspicious nor inauspicious.
Drishti’s Energetic Observation: The Subtle Vibration Test
Sit quietly, hold the bead in your palm, and chant “Om Namah Shivaya” three times.
- A genuine Rudraksha may feel warm, magnetic, or gently pulsating.
- A Bhadraksha will usually remain cold and inert.

No scripture supports energizing non-Rudraksha seeds.
Q5. How can I ensure authenticity?
Check for a single natural hole, deep mukhi lines, and purchase from a certified source.
