How to Clean Rudraksha: The Right Way According to Scriptures

How to Clean Rudraksha – The Right Way According to Scriptures

For centuries, Rudraksha beads have been revered as the sacred tears of Lord Shiva; they are powerful, protective, and deeply purifying.

But over time, many misconceptions have spread about how to maintain them, whether they should be washed with soap, oil, or milk, and how often they should be cleaned.

In my 21 years of study of the Shiva Purana, Padma Purana, and Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad, I have found that most modern methods of “purifying” Rudraksha beads do not conform to scriptural guidance.

This article, based on both scriptures and practical experience, explains the correct and respectful way to cleanse Rudraksha beads so that their spiritual and natural energies remain intact.

1. Why Should Rudraksha Be Cleaned?

Rudraksha is a natural seed. When worn on the body, it absorbs sweat, oil, and dust.
Over time, this can block its natural pores and dull its appearance.

According to Shiva Purana (Vidyeshvara Samhita), the Rudraksha bead should be kept clean and pure because it holds the divine vibration of Shiva-tattva.

Physical impurity doesn’t destroy its power, but regular cleaning helps preserve its spiritual resonance and longevity.

2. How to Clean Rudraksha Properly

There is no elaborate ritual for cleaning Rudraksha. The process is simple and scripturally supported:

Step 1: Remove the Rudraksha mala or bead and gently wipe it with a clean, dry cotton cloth.

Step 2: Soak it in clean, room-temperature water or Gangajal for about 10–15 minutes.
This removes dust or sweat without harming the seed.

Step 3: Use a soft-bristled brush (like an old toothbrush) to gently clean the grooves (mukhis).
Avoid using metal pins, nails, or anything sharp.

Step 4: Wipe the Rudraksha gently and allow it to air dry in shade.
Do not expose it to strong sunlight or artificial heat, as that can cause cracks.

Step 5 (optional): After drying, apply a very light coat of sesame or mustard oil between your palms and rub gently.
This keeps the bead naturally moisturized and prevents it from drying out.

3. Can Soap, Milk, or Perfume Be Used to Clean Rudraksha?

No. None of these substances are advised in the scriptures.

  • Soap or detergents: Damage the natural fibers of Rudraksha and block its pores.
  • Milk: While sacred, it is not meant for soaking Rudraksha; it causes bacterial buildup.
  • Perfume or alcohol-based liquids: Reduce the bead’s strength and spiritual purity.

The Padma Purana clearly mentions that Rudraksha should be kept in its natural state; pure, unscented, and unaltered.

4. How Often Should Rudraksha Be Cleaned?

There is no fixed rule, but based on practical use:

  • If worn daily, clean it once every 15–20 days.
  • If worn occasionally, clean once a month.
  • If stored, clean it before wearing again.

Devotees often choose Mondays (the day of Lord Shiva) or Pradosham days for cleaning and energizing Rudraksha.

5. Is Any Mantra Required While Cleaning Rudraksha?

While cleaning, maintain a calm and respectful mind.
You may chant the Shiva mantra:
“ॐ नमः शिवाय (Om Namah Shivaya)”
or the specific mantra of your Rudraksha — for example, for 5 Mukhi:
“ॐ ह्रीं नमः (Om Hreem Namah)”

Chanting purifies both the bead and your intention before wearing it again.

6. Does Cleaning Reduce Its Energy or Power?

No. Cleaning only removes physical impurities; it does not weaken spiritual energy.
According to the Shiva Purana, the divine vibration (Shiva-shakti) within Rudraksha never diminishes as long as the bead remains whole and is treated with respect.

Energy is not “washed away”, it is refreshed when cleaned and re-energized with mantra.

7. How to Re-Energize Rudraksha After Cleaning

After drying and applying light oil, place the Rudraksha on a clean cloth or copper plate.
Offer sandalwood paste or incense, and chant the Shiva mantra 11 or 108 times.
Then wear it again with reverence and focus.

The scriptures say:
“Rudraksham Dharanam Punyam Pavitram Papa Nashanam”,
Wearing Rudraksha is purifying and destroys negativity.
Its power flows best through a clean, devoted heart.

8. Precautions While Maintaining Rudraksha

  • Avoid exposing it to soap, perfumes, or harsh chemicals.
  • Remove while applying oil or bathing (to prevent bead swelling).
  • Don’t keep Rudraksha near fire or excessive heat.
  • Do not let anyone else wear your personal Rudraksha mala regularly.

FAQs

Q1. Can Rudraksha be cleaned with salt water?

No. Salt water can damage the outer layer of the bead. Use only pure or Gangajal water.

Q2. Can Rudraksha be soaked overnight?

No. Soaking for long hours can weaken the bead’s structure.

Q3. Should Rudraksha be oiled every time?

Only when the bead looks dry or faded; once every few months is enough.

Q4. Can Rudraksha be cleaned on any day?

Yes, but Mondays and Pradosh days are most auspicious.

Q5. Does old Rudraksha lose energy?

No. If properly preserved and cleaned, it remains spiritually active for years.

Conclusion

No need for complicated rituals or invented remedies.

The bead is alive with divine vibration; all it needs is purity, care, and devotion.
