Holika Dahan Story

There is a famous mythological story behind the festival of Holika Dahan. The story is about Vishnu devotee Prahlad, Asura Hiranyakashipu, and his sister Holika.

Asura Hiranyakashyap, after doing hard penance and getting a boon from Lord Brahma, started thinking of himself as a god. So he made everyone in his kingdom worship him.

He had acquired such powers as a boon that no creature, deity, demon or human being, neither in the day nor in the night, neither on earth, nor in the sky, nor at home, nor outside, not even any weapon could kill him.

Even though Hiranyakashipu was the opponent of Lord Vishnu, he had a son named Prahlad, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu since he was born.

Asura Hiranyakashipu was always angry with the Prahlad’s worship of Lord Vishnu. However, despite repeated persuasion by him, Prahlad did not stop worshiping Lord Vishnu.

Hiranyakashipu also tried to kill his son Prahlad many times but didn’t succeed. In the end, he called his sister Holika who had the boon of not burning from the fire. On the order of his brother Holika set on in the fire with Prahlad. With the courtesy of Lord Vishnu, Prahlad was saved, and Holika was burnt to death in that fire.
