Chaitra Navratri Katha: Those Observing Navratri Fast Must Read This Holy Story

Navratri festival is considered very special for the people of the Hindu religion. This time this festival started on 22 March. According to Panchang, Chaitra Navratri starts every year from the Pratipada date of Chaitra Shukla Paksha. It is said that the person who fasts during this time and worships Maa Ambe with a true heart, all his sorrows go away. It is considered necessary for those observing Navratri fast to read this epic story.

Once Brihaspati ji asked Brahma ji what is the reason for fasting and celebrating the Navratra of Shukla paksha of Chaitra and Ashwin month. What is the result of this fast, and how should it be done? Who observed this fast first?

Answering Brihaspatiji’s question, Brahmaji said – O Brihaspati! You have asked a very good question about the welfare of living beings. Those people who meditate on Durga, Mahadev, Surya, and Narayan who fulfill their wishes, become blessed. Navratri fasting is considered to fulfill all wishes.

By observing this fast, the disease of a sick person is eradicated. All kinds of sufferings of a man go away and there is happiness and prosperity in the house and the childless couple gets a son. This Navratri fast gets rid of all sins and by doing it the desire of the mind is fulfilled.

According to Brahmaji, a person who does not observe Navratri fast, must suffer many sorrows in life and suffers from pain and disease, he becomes crippled and remains devoid of wealth and grains, roaming around distraught with hunger and thirst and becoming insensitive. If the fasting person is not able to fast for the whole day, then he can keep this fast even after eating once and for ten days, the story of the Navratri fast is narrated along with the relatives.

Brahma ji continued with his story.  In ancient times, an orphan Brahmin named Peethat lived in Manohar Nagar. He was a great devotee of Bhagwati Durga. A very beautiful girl named Sumati was born to him. Every day, whenever her father used to worship Maa Durga at home, that girl used to be present there.

One day Sumati was playing with her friends and did not attend the worship of Maa Bhagwati. Her father got angry with the daughter and scolded his daughter, “Oh wicked daughter! Today you did not worship Bhagwati, that is why I will marry you with a leprosy patient or a poor man.”

Sumati was very sad after listening to her father and started saying to her father – “O father! I am your daughter; do as you wish. Marry me with a king, a wrestler, a poor man, or with whomever you want, but whatever is written in my fate will happen. I firmly believe that the results are a consequence of one’s karma and are under the control of man, but results are under the control of God.

Hearing the fearlessly spoken words of the girl, her father got even angrier. The father got his daughter married to a wrestler and got very angry and said to the daughter, now enjoy the fruits of your deeds, let us see what you do by relying on luck.

Seeing the condition of that girl, Goddess Bhagwati appeared and she said to Sumati – O Dear Brahmini I am happy with you; you can ask for whatever you want. Hearing this word of Bhagwati Durga, the girl said – Who are you? Devi said I am Adi Shakti Bhagwati and I am Brahmavidya and Saraswati. Hey Brahmini! I am pleased with the effect of the virtue of your previous birth on you.

Let me tell you the story of your previous birth, listen! You were the wife of Nishad (Bhil) in your previous birth and were extremely devoted. One day your husband committed theft. The soldiers caught both of you for stealing and took you to jail. They did not even give food to you and your husband.

In this way, during the days of Navratri, you neither ate anything nor drank water, because of which you fasted for nine days, unknowingly. Hey Brahmini! Pleased with the effect of the fast observed in those days, I give you the desired boon, ask whatever you wish.

In this way, listening to the words of Maa Durga, the Brahmini said – I bow down to you, please remove my husband’s leprosy. The Goddess said – Offer one day of the virtue of the fast you observed in those days to cure the leprosy of your husband, with the effect of that virtue your husband will be free from leprosy.

In this way, Brahmini was very happy after hearing the words of the goddess and her husband’s body became very radiant after being free from leprosy by the grace of Goddess Durga.

Seeing the beautiful body of the Brahmin husband, she started praising the goddess and said to the mother you are the remover of misery, the one who removes the anger of the three worlds, the one who removes all the sorrows, the one who heals the sick and the one who destroys the wicked. You are the mother of the world who destroys.

The goddess was very happy after listening to that Brahmini and said – O Brahmini! A very intelligent, wealthy, famous, and endowed son named Udalaya will soon be born to you. By giving such a boon, the goddess again said to the girl, ask for whatever you want. Brahmini said, if you are happy with me, then please describe to me the method of Navratri fast and its results in detail.

Mother Durga said – O Brahmin! Let me tell you the method of Navratri fasting which removes all sins, listening to which leads to salvation – fast for nine days in Navratri. If you cannot fast for the whole day, then have one meal at a time. Set up a ghat after asking learned Brahmins and make a garden and irrigate it with water daily.

Install the idols of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati Devi and worship them according to the rituals, and offer Arghya with flowers. By giving Arghya from the fruit of Bijaura, one gets form. By offering Arghya with nutmeg, fame is achieved, by offering Arghya with grapes, one gets success, by offering Arghya with Amla, one gets happiness and by offering Arghya with Banana, one gets ornaments.

In this way, after offering Arghya with flowers and fruits, on the ninth day, after the end of the fast, perform the Vidhi Vidhaan Havan. Perform Havan with sugarcane, coconut, ghee, wheat, honey, barley, sesame, bilva (vine), grapes and kadamba, etc. Lakshmi is attained by doing home with wheat, money is attained by Kheer and Champa flowers, and fast and happiness is attained by bel leaves.

Amla gives fame, a banana gives offspring, a lotus gives royal honor and grapes give wealth. By doing home with sugar, ghee, coconut, honey, barley and sesame, and fruits, the desired thing is achieved.

The person observing the fast should perform the homa according to this method and pay obeisance to the Acharya with great humility and give him Dakshina for the accomplishment of the Yagya. The person who fasts according to the method mentioned in this way, all his wishes are fulfilled, there is no doubt about it.

Whatever charity etc. is given in these nine days, returns manyfold. By observing this Navratri fast, you get the result of Ashwamedha Yagya. Hey Brahmini! Do this Uttam Vrat which fulfills all your wishes according to the method in pilgrimage, temple, or home.

Brahma ji said – O Brihaspati! In this way, after telling the method and result of the fast to the Brahmin, the goddess disappeared. The man or woman who observes this fast with devotion gets happiness in this world and finally attains rare salvation.

Oh, Brihaspati! This is the greatness of this rare fast that I have told you. Hearing this, Brihaspati ji became very happy and started saying to Brahmaji, O Brahmin! You have blessed me a lot by telling me the greatness of this Navratri fast. Brahma ji said O Brihaspati! This Goddess Bhagwati Shakti is going to follow all the worlds, who can know the effect of this Mahadevi, hail Goddess Bhagwati.
